The first and arguably most important step towards content creation for eCommerce is to identify the target audience for your brand. In order to create powerful and engaging content, you must know who it is that you are trying to reach and impact with your content.
Your goal is to ultimately drive sales through leveraging your content creation, and in order to do so, you content must resonate with a specific group of customers, therefore enticing the sale.
We typically advise consulting clients that you should analyse past customer data and use social media insights tools to get a better understanding of who your ideal customer is. This will help you create content that speaks to their needs and interests.
Also consider writing customer persona PDFs, which are just detailed descriptions of your ideal customer. This can help you further focus your content creation strategy. It helps us for our own brands, as well as completing "Business In A Box" packages for clients.
Once you have identified your target customer audience, it’s time to start thinking about how best to engage them with content.
From here is typically where you start looking into the content, after you understand your customer, what they like, how they think, and what will likely persuade them to buy from your brand.
The easiest way to get ahead is to simply model what works. If there are big brands ahead of you that are making a killing, doing what they do, for the most part, will allow you to get a slice of that profitable pie too.
We find that it’s generally always a good idea to monitor what your competitors are up to.
By analysing their content creation and distribution strategies (marketing efforts), you can get a better read of what works and what doesn’t in the eCommerce space right now.
You don't necessarily want to copy them, we advise heavily against plagiarism and fraud, but rather use competitor analysis as a way to form your own unique content strategy that builds on the successes of your competitors.
Take a look at what type of content they are producing, who is engaging with it, and how it's performing in terms of engagement and conversions. This will help you to understand what resonates with the target customer audience and provide valuable insights into how you can create more compelling content for your own brand.
From here, you can begin to form a unique content strategy which will help your brand stand out from the crowd and engage customers in a meaningful way.
Developing a unique brand identity is another vital element of content creation for eCommerce and Shopify stores.
The 'brand identity' is essentially the look, feel, and tone that you want to convey in your content. It's important to ensure that all of your content remains consistent with this identity, as it helps customers identify with your brand and helps to build trust.
A great way to get started with developing a brand identity is by creating a 'mood board' that outlines the type of content you want to create and the types of visuals you will use, like colors, fonts, photographs, graphics etc.
We recommend gathering visual inspiration from popular brands in your space, as well as personalities and influencers that your customers engage with. This will give you a good idea of what visuals resonate best in the eCommerce/Shopify space.
Once you have a clearer picture of what visuals you want to use, it’s time to start thinking about the type of content you want to create. This could include blog articles, case studies, infographics, videos, podcasts and more.
It’s essential to ensure that all of your content is unique, authoritative and engaging with your target customer audience in a way that encourages them take action. By creating content that resonates with the right people, builds trust and delivers value, you’ll be well on your way to engaging customers and driving conversions.
Remember, good content enticed interested people, and those are the ones you can convert into customers. Content is king, and understanding what customers resonate with will allow you to craft a great visual brand identity as well as giving you a reference point for the type of content you should be producing for your brand.
Now that you know the basics of content creation for eCommerce and Shopify stores, it’s time to look at the tools and equipment we recommend.
First up, if you want to produce great graphic design visuals like photographs, graphics or videos - then you will need some form of editing software. We recommend Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe Premiere Pro for the best results.
If you’re looking to produce written content, then a good word processor like Microsoft Word or Google Docs is essential. They both have plenty of features to help you get your writing, scripting and planning done with ease.
To edit video content, we typically use either Final Cut Pro X and Adobe After Effects. Each software has their advantages and drawbacks, but we use these primarily. Lots of newcomers tend to get away with using simple free software like iMovie too, and other alternatives.
In regards to actually going out and shooting amazing high-quality content or your ecommerce brand and products, we recommend getting access to a top-tier camera. You can either purchase a camera, rent a camera for 24 hours, or even hire photographers and videographers to create the content for you.
We like DSLR's that specialise in both HD video and premium photo quality. One camera we've been loving recently is the Canon 1DX Mark II, paired with the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 Mark II lens, which collectively retail for around $6,500 AUD. We invest heavily into content creation, as we understand its significance in the brand-building process.
To edit the image content we get, we typically have a simple workflow whereby we shoot the content, come back and. import the content from camera to computer, and into Adobe Lightroom. Inside this software we pick and sort out favourite images from the shoot, and select our final shots. From there, we finalise the shots and edit out any imperfections as well as colour-correcting the images so they are "perfect" in our eyes.
This overall content creation process for us is very tedious and time-consuming and often takes days or weeks of meticulous work to refine hundreds of amazing images, and dozens of video clips that are ready for our brands and our clients' brands. We believe every second of time invested is worth it, as content is a major lever that when pulled correctly, unlocks huge profits.
When it comes to creating quality content without the need for expensive camera equipment, many people turn to their mobile device. Smartphones today come equipped with powerful camera capabilities and with a few simple tips and tricks, you can create stunning content with your iPhone.
Before getting into the nitty-gritty details of shooting on an iPhone, it's important to understand the basics of composition and design. This will help you frame your shots, add depth to your photos, and learn how to effectively tell a story with each shot, therefore portraying your product and brand in a favourable manner.
When it comes time for shooting on an iPhone, there are a few technical elements that you should consider: adjust your shutter speed (to prevent blurring if there is movement), select the right focus point (to ensure your subject is in sharp focus), and adjust your light levels (e.g., use a cheap third-party filter or HDR mode on the newer iPhones).
When it comes to video, there are even more elements to consider: adjusting frame rate, ensuring proper exposure and white balance, as well as adding motion effects and transitions. You don't need a fancy camera or expensive equipment to create quality videos with your iPhone. With the right techniques and some practice, you can make great videos with just your phone.
Additionally, there are many mobile apps such as Lightroom or Cap Cut that allow you edit photos and video clips in order to make them more engaging for viewers while fitting within brand guidelines set out in your mood boards.
Using the tips and tricks outlined above, you'll be well on your way to creating amazing content for your eCommerce brand using just your iPhone.
When it comes to creating digital content for your eCommerce brand, one of the most important elements is ensuring that your brand has an omnipresence online.
Omnipresence means that your brand should be everywhere across social media channels and other digital outlets, as having multiple touch-points with customers leads to a more engaged audience and ultimately more sales when they're all ready to purchase.
The best way to achieve an omnipresence is by repurposing a single content shoot across multiple channels. This means that you can take one photo, video, or other piece of content and create variations of it for each digital channel whilst ensuring it still ensures consistency of your brand identity and "aesthetic".
For example, if you take a video on your camera phone, you can post it in a square format on Facebook, then repurpose that same content into an Instagram Reel or TikTok with some vertical edits. This way, you're maximizing the return on investment for each shoot and ensuring that you have multiple pieces of content across different channels.
The key to successfully repurposing content for omnipresence is effective organisation and creating a great system that works for you. Make sure you keep track of what content you have created and where it has been posted - this will help ensure that your brand identity remains consistent and identifiable across all channels.
Additionally, make sure to tailor the content for each platform as much as possible, as every social media channel has its own nuances and optimum content formats (for example, Facebook Posts vs Instagram Reels vs YouTube vs TikTok, you get the point).
By leveraging this strategy of repurposing one shoot for multiple platforms, you can easily create an omnipresence across digital channels; thus building your brand visibility and customer engagement to ultimately increase sales.
Creating great content for your eCommerce brand is a surefire way to increase visibility, engagement and ultimately sales.
By leveraging the power of neuroscience tips, repurposing content across multiple channels and tailoring it to each platform's nuances in order to create an omnipresence online you can ensure that your customers stay engaged with your brand.
